Unique childhood shapes Kazna Asker's distinctive path in the realm of fashion industry
In the world of fashion, Kazna Asker is making a name for herself by blending British and Yemeni cultural influences with Islamic and sportswear fashion. This unique approach creates distinctive, heritage-rooted designs that promote cultural diversity and modest fashion narratives within contemporary settings.
The journey of Kazna Asker began in 2022 when she was introduced to Fashion Trust Arabia (FTA) and won the prestigious FTA Prize for the Franca Sozzani Debut Talent Category. This recognition marked the beginning of a significant chapter in her career.
Recently, Asker showcased her latest collection at the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) in Mumbai, India. The showcase was part of FTA's Guest Country Award, a trailblazing initiative that fosters international creative dialogue and provides mentorship benefits and financial support.
One of Asker's favorite looks from the collection was an electric-blue abaya-inspired jacket and maxi skirt with contrasting traditional woven fabric inlays, styled with layers of chunky silver jewellery and scarves, and completed with an over-sized hat inspired by Yemeni shepherds.
Jaspreet Chandok, Group Vice President of Reliance Brands, expressed excitement about the collaboration and future integrations between the fashion industries of MENA and India. Marta Hraoui, Communications Director of Fashion Trust Arabia, praised Asker's work in highlighting Yemeni traditions and narratives through her designs.
Asker's designs have been influenced by the cultural contrasts she experienced growing up in Sheffield, where she would see her family members wearing traditional attire and western clothing. This fusion of traditions and contemporary styles is a reflection of her upbringing and is evident in her work.
In addition to her fashion achievements, Asker has also made significant strides in other areas. She was one of the first designers to feature a hijab on the runway at Central St Martins' MA Fashion Show, London. Asker also protests for Palestine and has addressed her hometown's race equality commission.
Asker's designs draw on her experience as a Yemini raised in England, creating a unique fusion of traditional Yemeni prints and embroideries coupled with a British aesthetic. This approach has positioned her as a fresh, influential voice in modest fashion and cultural narratives.
Looking ahead, Asker plans to continue working with refugees and asylum seekers in Sheffield on fashion projects, with the goal of dressing her community. She also shared a short film entitled "Fight For Me, Sheffield" that tied in with her first showing at London Fashion Week in 2023.
Following Kazna Asker's official channels on social media platforms like Instagram would provide the latest announcements on upcoming fashion showcases or community events. Asker continues to develop her brand actively, with updates and events likely to be shared via these platforms.
