University Hall Discourse: Economic Fraud and Fiscal Fairness, featuring Anne Brorhilker
German prosecutor Anne Brorhilker, renowned for her role in uncovering the Cum-Ex tax fraud scandal, will be delivering a lecture at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg on July 1st, 20XX. The event, titled "Financial Crime, Tax Justice, and Political Influence on Prosecution," will take place at 6:15 PM in the Audimax on the university campus.
Brorhilker, who previously worked for many years at the Public Prosecutor's Office in Cologne, played a key role in uncovering the Cum-Ex tax scandal. As a lead investigator, she tirelessly pursued complex financial crime cases, despite facing resistance and criticism, including from within her own agency.
Her efforts were instrumental in tracking down the intricate schemes behind the Cum-Ex tax fraud, which involved multiple actors exploiting tax loopholes to reclaim dividend taxes illegally. Brorhilker's work included obtaining search warrants for major operations aimed at exposing the fraud network.
In April 2024, Brorhilker announced her move from the Public Prosecutor's Office to the civil society organization "Citizen's Movement Finance Turn," where she now serves as Co-Managing Director and Head of the Financial Crime department.
The lecture is being organised by Jun.-Prof. Dr. Lucia Sommerer, who holds the Junior Professorship for Criminology, Criminal Compliance, Risk Management, and Criminal Law at MLU. Brorhilker's insights into financial crimes and her experiences in the Cum-Ex tax fraud investigation are expected to provide valuable perspectives for the audience.
Attendees are encouraged to attend this informative lecture to gain a deeper understanding of financial crimes, tax justice, and the challenges faced in prosecuting such complex cases. Brorhilker's work has significantly contributed to bringing large-scale financial crimes to light, and her lecture promises to be an enlightening and engaging event.
