University of Freiburg Launches €3.6M Initiative to Support US Researchers Facing Political Restrictions
The University of Freiburg, along with other institutions in Baden-Württemberg, is launching an initiative to support researchers facing political restrictions in the US. The Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK) is backing this programme with €3.6 million.
The initiative, involving the Institutes for Advanced Studies at the universities of Freiburg, Tübingen, and Konstanz, aims to provide up to 14 researchers with a safe haven for their work. These researchers, particularly those in fields like biomedicine and climate science, will have the opportunity to continue their research without political interference.
The fellowship, open to both US-American and international researchers, offers scientific freedom and interdisciplinary research environments. Fellows can choose to work at any of the three institutes and will benefit from a cross-location framework programme. The fellowships are designed to last up to two years, opening up new perspectives in the national and European science space.
The application process for these fellowships is set to begin soon, with successful candidates expected to start their work in spring 2026. This initiative not only secures scientific freedom but also supports international careers, fostering a collaborative research environment across Baden-Württemberg.
