Youthful individuals with qualifications are in demand for public service roles, as demonstrated by the welcome ceremony held for 147 newly selected trainees at Bremen City Hall.
In the heart of Bremen, Germany, the Upper Town Hall recently played host to a significant event as Mayor and Finance Senator Björn Fecker welcomed 147 new apprentices to the city's public sector. The Training and Further Education Center (AFZ) will provide intensive support to these newcomers, as they embark on their journeys in a total of 31 different professions.
Bremen's public sector offers a wide range of training opportunities, as stated by Senator Fecker, and these opportunities are not limited to the conventional. The sector provides incentives for training, including crisis-proof jobs, family-friendly work models, exciting fields of study, and attractive health and further training programs.
These crisis-proof jobs in Bremen revolve around areas linked to industrial stability, technology leadership, infrastructure, and services supporting major industries. They include hydrogen technology and renewable energy sectors, manufacturing and engineering sectors, public infrastructure and transport safety, and creative and media industries.
Hydrogen technology and renewable energy sectors, actively promoted in Bremen as part of future energy transition programs, offer jobs that are relatively secure amid economic shifts. The manufacturing and engineering sectors, especially in advanced production technologies, are characterized by high specialization and strong regional clusters in Bremen. Public infrastructure and transport safety, linked to companies like Knorr-Bremse, a major player in rail and commercial vehicle safety, sustain jobs that support safe and efficient mobility. Creative and media industries, promoted in Bremen with some public-sector involvement, provide stable employment through cultural projects, regional media, and civic engagement initiatives.
Exciting fields of study supported or encouraged by Bremen’s public sector and related institutions reflect the city’s industrial profile and innovative environment. Renewable energy and hydrogen technology studies, logistics and supply chain management, mechatronics, precision engineering, and applied physics are all growing areas in Bremen. Public administration and management, especially roles related to economic development, urban planning, and cultural management, are continuously needed in a metropolitan region like Bremen.
Katja Lessing, head of the Training and Further Education Center, encourages the new apprentices to approach their training actively with curiosity and openness. Kai Mues from the works council emphasizes the importance of solidarity between employees and apprentices. Mues suggests that apprentices should organize themselves in a trade union to ensure good pay and working conditions. The works council should also be supported, as mentioned by Mues, as many things cannot be moved alone.
The age range of the apprentices is wide, with the youngest being 15 years old and the oldest being a 49-year-old woman. The most popular professions among the apprentices are administrative assistants (47) and legal assistants (19). The coming years will see many public sector employees retiring, making qualified young talent essential for good citizen service.
Bremen's public sector is fulfilling its responsibility in combating the skills shortage, as stated earlier by Finance Senator Björn Fecker. The event marked a significant step in ensuring the city's future, as it nurtures the next generation of professionals in the public sector.
